1st NFL Coach Hired for 2014 Season is Bill O'Brien

The first NFL coach of the 2014 season has been hired for the Houston Texans and his

name is Bill O’Brien. ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen first reported the news of this story, according to ESPN.com.

The greatest psychological attribute I see in the hiring of O’Brien is his mental toughness. Many may know O’Brien from the past few years of his coaching at Happy Valley in Penn State, which turned out to not be so happy, according to Pro Football Talk.com. The most important piece of NFL history I remember from Bill O'Brien was

his time spent with the New England Patriots.

O’Brien was the assistant coach from 2007 to 2012 for the New England Patriots. He was the offensive coordinator during the record breaking 16-0 dream season that ended in a Super Bowl 46 loss to the New York Giants, according to ESPN.com.

The biggest question will be what player to pick in the upcoming 2014 NFL draft in April? The Texans have the first overall pick in the draft. Judging by the way the season unfolded, the Texans undoubtedly need a QB for the future. Matt Schaub did what he was supposed to do during his time as the starting QB. Previous coach Gary Kubiak did for Schaub what 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh did for Alex Smith. Both were underachieving QBs that could never take their teams to the next level. Just as Alex Smith’s time came to an end in San Francisco, so does the Schaub’s time come to an end in Houston.

Two very high profile college kids O’Brien and the Texans organization may look at are Texas A&M QB, Johnny Manziel or Louisville’s QB Teddy Bridgewater. Manziel’s possible final college performance in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl vs. Duke was outstanding. The stats do not justify Manziel’s game play and passion for the game of football. People may not like his pompous attitude, but there is no denying his ability to play the game of football.

Teddy Bridgewater is a name most people may not know, but NFL scouts know very well.

Bridgewater could have easily been a finalist in the Heisman trophy this past season, but Bridgewater cannot play defense as well as offense. Bridgewater played phenomenal in his trouncing win over the Miami Hurricanes in the Russell Athletic Bowl.

He has the prototype look and the intangible feel of an NFL QB. He is 6’3” weighing just over 200 pounds. Bridgewater can wow you with some of the most incredible soft touch passes of any veteran QB in the game today.

My choice as a head coach would be to choose Teddy Bridgewater. From the outside Bridgewater seems to be humble and he is coachable. As a General Manager I may choose Manziel. Manziel played in Texas and the ticket sales would sky rocket by drafting him. We’ll soon see what the Texans do.

The most important factor in this whole decision to hire O’Brien for the Texans job is his mentality to keep players accountable by challenging them. Take a look at how O’Brien challenged one of the greatest of all time during the New England Patriots vs. Washington Pro Team game on December 11, 2011.

This is all that needs to be said of what can be expected out of the Texans new head coach. Get ready Houston fans…the Texans are ready for a ride back to the top beginning in 2014.
