Dallas Cowboys Coaching Does Not Match the Talent

Since Jason Garrett has been head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, there has been a big imbalance between the coaching and the talent. Every year media people to include ex-coaches, ex-players, and football aficionados, talk about the Cowboys talent.

We always hear this phrase, “the Dallas Cowboys are one of the most talented teams in the NFL” The problem, the coaching does not measure the talent. Even if the talent is not as good as what everyone says, the talent is still better than the coaching.

Watching the first half of the Chicago Bears game proved the defensive coaching has no clue of how to mix up the play calling. Most of the season, I felt the offensive coaching was unimaginative. That part may be true, but at least Garrett has always had a top 10 offense every year he has coached. The defense has to measure up.

The defense has a lot of effort, but they’re constantly in the wrong place on the field. After the Bears beat the Boys 45-28 on Monday Night Football, the Dallas defense is the worst in the league giving 427.5 yards per game, according to NFL.com. Through 13 games, that is the fourth worst defense in NFL history, according to NFL Network. To me, it is because the coaching is not effective. I believe it is time for young blood in coaching and smarter players on the defense.

Even Hall of Fame RB, Emmitt Smith weighed in on the Bears vs. Boys MNF game and voiced his opinion on Twitter of how the Dallas Cowboys defense was playing

Emmitt posted this Tweet during Central time in Dallas (9:41 EST).

It is too difficult to keep starting over with a new head coach, but Garrett has no clue of how to lead men. He has lost this team and the defense is continually embarrassing to watch. The worst part is, no one seems to care, yet everyone was mad with Dez getting upset about the defense giving up so many yards every game. One thing is for certain…if Jerry decides to get rid of Garrett, he must bring in an explosive head coach.

What I mean by explosive is someone with a real pedigree for coaching. In my blog titled Dallas Cowboys Number One Priority…Marketing or Winning Games?

There are only a few head coaches I would reach out to if I were the Dallas Cowboys General Manager. Currently, the Boys have no identity as a team. There is no real leadership amongst the players and passion with a desire to never quit seems to be lacking. The quite professionalism of Jason Garrett is too much for me.

Tom Landry and Tony Dungy are the only two Super Bowl winning coaches to carry a quiet demeanor. All other winning coaches had serious grit to their personalities. The Cowboys have soft-minded players who play as if they don’t believe in themselves. They quit too easily when things go array. Frankly, their coach has not proven he can weather the losing storms, so it is hard for players to believe themselves.

After that rant, the few head coaches I would choose for the job are
  • John Gruden – The Gruden Grinder is what he is called in the ESPN booth on Monday Night Football. Gruden took over the Buccaneers job in2002 and won Super Bowl 37. Gruden would be the man to command respect with a proven background. Even if the Cowboys lose a game, it won’t be because of the coaching. It will be because the other team was just better on that particular day.
  • Nick Saban – Gutsy, tough, and makes sure everyone is held accountable. He will bring in tough-minded athletes who can play their roles. Saban routinely recruits strong willed athletes. Plus those high schools kids are willing to play at Alabama whether it’s based on history or Saban himself. The kids want to play. There is no question, college kids and pro kids want to be a Dallas Cowboy.
  • Norv Turner – This may be the only man who Jerry will trust who will not take over. Norv may not be the sexiest pick, but he has more veteran leadership than Garrett has. On January 1, 2013, I wrote that Norv should have been the offensive coordinator, but that did not happen. Norv could always take the Chargers to the playoffs, but he just could not win. Garret can’t even get to the playoffs at 8-8 every year.
  • Rob Ryan - Bite the bullet Jerry and hire Rob Ryan back. This team can win enough games on offense with the talent, but the defense needs to improve drastically. Firing Rob looks like a terrible idea in hindsight, but Rob can work with the defense. It won't happen, but it was worth writing about.

In conclusion, get a new head coach and draft all defensive players after this season. The offense can do enough without drafting players. We need defense to help Romo, DeMarco and Dez. Demarcus Ware is getting old and looking clueless play after play. The Washington game at the end of the year looked bad last season, but each game this year has made Demarcus look very average. His talent is diminishing with his injuries, so he needs to become a situational player now.

Point blank, Dallas needs new blood at two of the three levels of coaching with the exception of special teams.
