Dallas Cowboy Comparisons: Dez Bryant & Chris Brown, Plus More

I have consistently watched sports media use statistics in an accurate manner, but then there are times when it is used for bias purposes. After the Lions vs. Cowboys game most sports analysts and commentators compared Megatron Calvin Johnson to Dez Bryant. The stats were shown where
Megatron had 329 yards receiving and Dez had only 72.

A great deal of the sports show talked about how Dez is not in the same category as Megatron. What I also noticed is the bias that some of the announcers used. People need to understand that when certain athletes do not like other athletes for whatever reason, comparisons will be unfair.

At this point in time, Dez Bryant is the equivalent to R&B singer Chris Brown.

Both superstars often times act immature, but Dez has progressed better than Chris. They both have a troubled past with domestic abuse. They are both immensely talented with GOD given abilities that most of the world dreams of. The biggest difference between Dez and Chris is that Dez plays for the given name “America’s Team” the Dallas Cowboys and Chris flies solo.

With that being said Tom Jackson made a comment on ESPN’s Monday Night Football Countdown on October 29, 2013, that Dez is not in the same caliber with Megatron. He made the stat comparison based on the total number of yards each had. I have often heard people talk about Bill Parcells’ inability to win a playoff game while coaching in Dallas. People seem to forget that Parcells coached for four years and made two playoff appearances with two unknown QB’s in Quincy Carter and Tony Romo.

My thing is this…it is very hard for people who hate the Cowboys to truly be objective about many different situations. I don’t think Tom Jackson hates the Cowboys, but I do believe he dislikes Dez Bryant’s immature and unprofessional approach to the game of football. Even if you dislike the approach you should still be objective about your analysis. Megatron had a 23.5 per catch average against the Cowboys while Dez had a 24 per yard per catch average against the Lions. Simple math states if Dez would have had the same amount of touches as Megatron the stats would have been the same.

As for Bill Parcells…the current team in Dallas was built on Parcells draft work between Tony Romo, Jason Whitten, Jason Hatcher and DeMarcus Ware. Wade Phillips made the draft pick of Sean Lee and Anthony Spencer. Jason Garret drafted Dez Bryant. Parcells was winning with a bunch of 5-11 left overs from the Dave Campo days. Once he got the team where he wanted it to be, T.O. came to town and Parcells called it quits after one year.

Parcells could not work with T.O., but he would have groomed Dez into a better machine than he is today. Parcells was a master at getting the best out of a player. He won a Super Bowl with New York Giants QB Jeff Hostetler. Who is he, many may ask? Just a guy Parcells found and won a ring with in Super Bowl 25.

If Parcells had today’s Cowboy roster, Romo would not have all of these end of the game meltdowns and the Boys would have had two rings already. Parcells is like a Phil Jackson. Not everyone can coach egos and talent. Being a professional who does not yell and scream as a coach does not make you a leader. Yes, you look good, but your still may not be fit to lead.

Tony Dungy is about the only coach I can remember who never yelled. That is only due to his spirituality. If Jason Garrett wants to be compared to the best he must understand the talent he has and use it. Jimmy Johnson won his first Super Bowl in his fifth season as a coach. Garrett is currently in his fifth year. Dallas can still make the playoffs due to the NFC East conference, but Garrett must step up as Jimmy Johnson did.

Calling the same old plays from the Cowboys, Norv Turner, offensive coordinator days in 1993 will not work. Garrett must scheme and adjust as the game goes on. Has anyone ever noticed that Romo’s big passing plays are probably 90% from broken or busted plays where he is scrambling? Think about it….these are not the designed plays drawn up by Garrett. The Boys have been 8-8 over the past two years based on talent, not coaching. They are basically playing backyard football.

The offensive line has had trouble for years and Garrett cannot seem to find a running back to carry the load. The line has done better this year with the addition of Brian Waters, but he tore his his triceps in Lions game so there goes that. You don’t have to find Emmitt Smith all the time, but there should be someone.

I have compared stats for Dez, Parcells and Garrett, but this is all about Garrett understanding that Dez should get the ball more when there is single coverage. He should morph into Parcells to make sure Romo is aware of single coverage on Dez. He should plan to adjust his play calling and freestlye based on what is happening in the game, not on his scripted or prerecorded notes. Last, he must act like Jimmy and aggressively utilize his stars. Not passively and professionally, but aggressively and professionally. Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, and Michael Irvin received the bulk of the touches to win three Super Bowls. The ball only needs to be spread around if other guys are open. Other than that, draw up the plays for the playmakers. If you’re not sure, let me give you a clue:
  1. Dez first in passing game
  2. DeMarco Murray in running game
  3. Whitten as security blanket
  4. Rookie wide receiver Terrance Williams
  5. If Miles Austin gets healthy use him in the slot
  6. Use Cole Beasley in mismatches against safeties and linebackers
  7. Use the speed of Lance Dunbar out of the backfield like Darren Sproles in New Orleans for screens and draw plays

Mental note: Garrett has not even used Tight End Gavin Escobar that much this season. I thought Dallas was going to be the next pre 2013 New England Patriots in Gronkowski and Hernandez?

Last reminder…watch how Sean Peyton utilizes his offense down in New Orleans. Most people cannot even name anyone outside of Drew Brees and Jimmy Graham. Peyton comes from the Parcells tree of coaching where you coach aggressively and utilize whoever you have and create the mismatch at all times. You put as many points on the board as possible in case a team comes back.

No more Mr. Professional nice guy Garrett. Time to toughen up and still be professional and do what is needed to win. Forget not playing to lose. Quit getting a 10 point lead and relaxing. Look at Payton Manning and the Broncos….score points at all cost. They are aggressive but still professional.
