The No Huddle Fast Break is Needed for the Cowboys

I know many of you may be asking…what is the No Huddle Fast Break?

It does not make any sense?

My definition of the No Huddle Fast Break is an offensive football team that runs a “no huddle offense” or a “hurry up offense” like a fast break is run in basketball.

The Dallas Cowboys are in desperate need of a fast break style of offense.  For most of the 2012 season, Jason Garrett has run the normal offense by slowing the offense down.  He slows it down by going back to the huddle after each offensive play.  With this style, the team lacks the necessary drive to play consistent.  Basically, they slow down like a half court style of offense in basketball.

Whenever you have offensive fire power, you must utilize what you have.  The 1980’s Los Angeles Lakers team with Ervin ‘Magic’ Johnson, James Worthy, Kareem Abdul Jabbar and others were a potent offensive team.  The Lakers ran the showtime offense lead by Magic.

In no way am I saying that the Cowboys are the 80’s Lakers, but
the Boys have some offensive weapons.  The current 2012-2013 Lakers fired their head coach Mike Brown because he ran a slow, stop and go, half court Princeton University style offense.  NBA brains like TNT’s CharlesBarkley, Kenny Smith and others have heavily criticized the Princeton style, according to the LA Times.  They feel Brown should have run a fast break offense.  Even though the 2012 Lakers are old, Smith says they have the talent to get easy transition baskets.

Whenever the Cowboys have gone into the "no huddle offense" or "hurry up offense", they score points for some reason.  There were a few Cowboys games that come to mind where Garrett has run the no huddle offense:
  • Atlanta Falcons - the Cowboys were losing in Atlanta on Sunday Night Football and he Garrett used the no huddle fast break.  The Boys scored the first and only touchdown in seconds before ultimately losing 19-13.
  • New York Giants - Garrett was down to the Giants 23-0 in Cowboys Stadium and came back to take the lead 24-23.  Why…the no huddle offense.  Now the Boys still lost 29-24, but hey Garrett says he focuses on the positives and not the negative.
  • Cleveland Browns - Dallas was down 13-0 at the half.  Garrett did not install the no huddle until the 4th quarter.  Then what happened...the Boys took the Browns into overtime and came out with the victory. Overtime, to the Browns?  Really?
  • Washington Redskins - The Skins were eating the Cowboys alive on Thanksgiving Day 28-3 at halftime.  What happened, the no huddle fast break provided a comeback only to fall short of a victory 38-31.
1980's Showtime Lakers
Currently, Garrett is taking too long to make in game adjustments.  Garrett needs to talk with Magic Johnson or coach turned executive Pat Riley to understand situational needs and game tempo.  The Boys stand with a win-loss record of 5-6 with 5 games to go.  Bill Parcells always said, "You are what your record says you are."  If his play calling picks up the pace for the final 5 games, the offense and the team has a chance.

If Garrett continues to do it his way, which he probably will, look for Jerry Jones to make a run at 2 coaches:
Mike Holmgren
  1. Mike Holmgren, who has already stated he wants the Cowboys job if available in 2013, according to the Bleacher Report.com.
  2. Suspended New Orleans Saints head coach, Sean Payton.  As of November 6, 2012, Payton was granted permission to renegotiate contract talks with the Saints.  I wonder why he has not resigned yet?  Hummm….
Let’s wait and see ladies and gentleman!
