Most of the NFL sports
world, especially NY Jets fans, could never quite understand why the Jets
traded for QB Tim Tebow before the 2012 season.
Nothing against Tebow as a person, but his completion percentage as an
NFL QB is not good. He completed less than 50% of his passes in the 2 years at Denver, according to Pro Football Reference.com.
Jets QB - Mark Sanchez |
As for QB Mark Sanchez, it
looks like the honeymoon is over in NY, according to the New York Daily News. Most
people say marriages only last 2 to 2 ½ years.
Well, Sanchez lasted a little longer than that. According to Pro Football Reference.com,
Sanchez had a phenomenal marriage with the Jets for 4 years when he began his career in
2009. Sanchez and the Jets defense went
to the AFC championship 2 years in a row from 2009 to 2010. The last 2 years of the relationship were the
toughest for the franchise, the media and the fans. With the addition of Tebow, the relationship
only became rockier.
I just wonder why the Jets
signed Tebow and gave Sanchez a 3-year extension? This just doesn’t make sense at all?
Jets QB - Tim Tebow |
In March of 2012, Sanchez
signed a 3-year extension covering 2014 – 2016.
The deal included $20.5 million in guaranteed money, according to ESPN.com. With this deal, the public and
Sanchez would assume the guaranteed money meant the Jets believed in him, right? The funny thing is, I think the Jets really
wanted Sanchez to be the future, but bringing Tebow in as backup did not help
the mental “psychy” of the starter.
In order for the Jets to
move forward, I believe the front office needs to take into account a QB who
can handle the pressure of the NY media and the NY locker room. Anonymous players from the Jets always seem to
provide the media with a lot of inside information from the locker room. The QB needs to understand the environment
he’s walking into.
Here are 3 QB choices I
think the Jets should seriously consider bringing to New York:
1. Washington Redskins QB, Kirk Cousins
Redskins QB - Kirk Cousins |
Cousins
has lead the Redskins to 1 full game victory and 1 fourth quarter leading into
an overtime victory against the Baltimore Ravens this year. Cousins’ is an accurate QB with great
confidence in his abilities. He seems to
understand different types of football situations without mentally breaking
down. Cousins will probably the number
one QB in trade talks by teams desperately searching for a QB when the season
ends. Mike Shanahan and the Skins knew
what they were doing when they made this draft choice. The Skins could possibly get back a top draft
pick after losing a lot to get RG3.
2. Philadelphia Eagles QB, Michael Vick
Eagles QB - Mike Vick |
Vick
has been physically beaten up over the 2011 and 2012 seasons, but mainly due to poor
offensive lines that have surrounded him.
Vick still has the ability to get the job done if he is surrounded with
a minimal amount of protection and a good, not great, but good running game. If the Jets Santonio Holmes gets healthy and the Jets
can add 1 more receiver, Vick can provide the spark the Jets haven not seen since
2010. Even though Vick is not the future,
the Jets can also draft a QB in the 2013 NFL draft.
3. Seattle Seahawks QB, Matt Flynn
Seahawks QB - Matt Flynn |
Matt
Flynn is an interesting QB. Flynn never displayed
any poor emotions or made a scene when coach Pete Carroll of the Seahawks chose
rookie QB, Russell Wilson over Flynn.
Wilson has had a phenomenal year, so Carroll easily made the right
choice, but Flynn remained a professional.
Flynn was paid a lot of money this offseason. In March of 2012, Flynn was offered $26
million for 3 years to be the starting QB for the Seahawks, according to NFL.com.
J.E.T.S. Fan - Fireman Ed |
Currently,
the Jets could make a serious play for Flynn by trading Sanchez. Maybe Pete Carroll would take a chance on
hiring his college QB back at USC to be the backup and mentor for Russell
Wilson?
Additionally, the Jets number one fan Fireman ED has officially retired after an awful 2012 season. Even the J.E.T.S. fans are in a state of
shock as the Jets QB saga continues…..
